Behaviour support that focuses on understanding,
not just behaviour
Bright Bug Support provides behaviour support and counselling for children, adolescents and young adults with disability and complex emotional or behavioural needs. Support is centred on understanding what’s happening beneath behaviour and working alongside individuals, families and support teams to build calm, practical strategies that support safety and wellbeing.
Our approach is strengths-based and neuro-affirming, with a strong focus on relationships, dignity and choice. Strategies are designed to be realistic, respectful and meaningful within everyday environments, supporting long-term growth rather than short-term fixes.

At Bright Bug Support, behaviour is understood as communication. Our work focuses on identifying the needs, experiences and environments influencing behaviour, rather than trying to “fix” or suppress it. Support is collaborative and tailored, involving families, carers and support teams where appropriate. Strategies are practical, strengths-based and designed to reduce distress, support safety and build skills that can be used in everyday life. We work in ways that are neuro-affirming, trauma-aware and respectful of each person’s individuality, culture and lived experience.

Supporting Behaviour
Through Understanding
Behaviour support focuses on understanding the reasons behind behaviour and responding in ways that reduce distress and improve quality of life. Rather than focusing only on what someone is doing, behaviour support looks at the whole context of a person’s life.
Behaviour is influenced by many factors, including communication, relationships, sensory needs, health, routines and past experiences. By understanding these influences, support can be tailored in ways that feel respectful, practical and meaningful for the individual and the people around them.
Behaviour support is flexible and responsive, adapting over time as understanding grows and needs change.
Understanding what matters to the person
Looking beneath behaviour to identify needs and patterns
Considering environments, relationships and experiences
Building practical strategies that support safety and participation
Working collaboratively with families and support teams
Behaviour Support Stages
Interim Behaviour Support
An Interim Behaviour Support Plan may be required when there are immediate safety concerns or restrictive practices in place. The focus is on supporting safety and putting short-term strategies and safeguards in place while further assessment and planning occurs, in line with NDIS Commission requirements.
Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA)
A Functional Behaviour Assessment is used to better understand the reasons behind behaviour. It involves gathering information through observations, conversations and review of relevant information across home, school and community settings to identify patterns, triggers and unmet needs.
Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan
A Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan is developed using information gathered through assessment and collaboration. The plan outlines proactive strategies, skill-building supports and clear guidance for everyday environments, with the goal of improving quality of life and reducing the need for restrictive practices over time.
